Where do you add another Fluksonian for viewing

michi's picture

When you are viewing your dash, below the graph, there is an input field "Add another Fluksonian" where you can enter a user name and press "Add". Note that this won't work if your consumption data is private or the other user's consumption data is private.

It's right there in the image you posted :)

Just below your R32 logo are Add and Remove buttons, and a text entry box beside them.

BTW, I drive an R32 too :-)

Sorry, it's "Show" and "Remove". Type a user name into the text field. If a match is found, below the text field, the user is shown. Click on that user, and the user's avatar should appear beside your own. To turn that user's data on and off in your graph, click on the avatar. It took me a while figure out how this works. It's not the most intuitive interface.

@michi What could be done to make the interface more intuitive?

michi's picture

I had my consumption data set to private. When I type something into the text widget, no matter what I do, nothing happens. I can press "Show", "Remove", hit Return or Tab, nothing happens. It took me ages to figure out that I had to set my consumption public to make this work. So, a good first step would be to pop a message as soon as I type something into the text widget to tell me that this isn't going to work unless my consumption is public. (I think this approach is preferable to removing the widget altogether when consumption is private because, then, the use may never find out that is possible to add another Fluksonian.)

The next issue is that, if I want add someone, it doesn't work as I would expect. I type "bazzle" into the text widget and hit "Show". Nothing happens. I hit "Remove" and nothing happens. Hit Return, same thing. Put the cursor back into the text widget, and still nothing. So, I put the cursor back into the text widget, erase the final "e" of "bazzle" and wait a moment and, lo and behold, I get this pop-up that says "bazzle". So, I go "ah, it finally understood me" and I hit return. What happens? Nothing. Except that, if I next hit "Show", it actually shows me Bazzle's data (but not his avatar).

The avatars don't refresh either. After adding Bazzle and actually seeing his graph, I still don't have the avatar on the page. To make the avatar visible, I have to refresh the page.

So now, I'm there with Bazzle's avatar showing and I decide that I'm sick of looking at his data and remove him (sorry Bazzle ;) ). I click on Bazzle's avatar and click on "Remove". Nothing happens. I try again, still nothing. I click "Remove" a second time. No go. I click "Add" and then "Remove". Same thing. Finally, I figure out that, to remove someone, I have to click "Remove" and THEN click on the avatar. That's completely back to front. Most UI's use the "select and apply action" paradigm. I first click on something I want to do something with, and then chose the action I want carried out. Here, it's the other way around.

I guess I've made a start on explaining on how it could be improved? ;-)

Thanks for the detailed feedback, Michi. This is something I can really use to start making the interface more intuitive. What seems clear to me is that the location of the show/remove toggle buttons should change. If not, people will indeed associate the buttons with the text input field. Instead, it defines the action to be taken when clicking on an avatar: show/hide or remove. It's very fast to use when you know how to use it. I've got three rows of avatars in my dash. That's why I wanted to make the actions single click. It allows me to very quickly add/remove sensors to/from the dash. It's just not very intuitive.

Yes, separating the avatars from the text widget would be a good first step. You could display the avatars in a vertical scrolling widget if there are too many, with a tick box beside each one. That would make it immediately obvious which one is on and off, and how to toggle them.

The other major point is that, if I type a valid user name into the text widget and hit "Show" or "Remove", it should work. I shouldn't have to wait for the pop up with that same string in it and have to click on that.

Cheers,

Michi.
